My favourite writer

My favourite writer is Munshi Premchand. Munshi Premchand was born on 31 July 1880 and passed away on 8 October 1936, at the age of 56. He was born in Varanasi and had his last breath in Varanasi. Munshi Premchand was his pen name and Dhanapal Raj Shrivastava was his real name.

Munshi Premchand authored his work in Hindi and Urdu language. He incorporated the western style with the Indian themes and created his unique writing style. He generally wrote about Indian society, culture and challenged the wrongdoing present in the society.

His father Ajaib Lal was a clerk in post office and his mother Anandi Devi. But his parents passed away when he was still in his teenage years. At the age of eight he recieved the knowledge of Urdu and Persian in the madrasa. After the death of his mother , his father remarried. But he received no affection from his stepmother and family. Stepmother became a recurring theme in many of his works.

Premchand had passed the matriculation exam but couldn't study further. And did odd jobs before taking a job of teacher school. He continued teaching till 1921 as he joined Non cooperation movement. He first got recognition for the Urdu poetry and novels. Till Premchand time, short story was not accepted as a piece of literary form. But Premchand writing changed this. But his legendary work and best works came in the language of Hindi.

He first published his work in 1905 but was heavily criticised by the literary society. But he bounced back. He was the first hindi author that had used realism theme in his works.  His works throws a light on the farmer , poor and middle class problem. He criticised the malpractices of the religious activities. He was against the wrongdoing of poor. Corruption, child marriage, widowhood, prostitution , poverty , system etc were the recurring topics of his work.

He mastered the language of Urdu and Hindi. He played a major role of creation of short stories genre and serious novel as well. Premchand single handily lifted the level of fiction and narration. Such that his work often compared with the realistic fiction of Europian style. He was the first hindi writer to come up with the social realism in his literary works. He supported the idea of economic liberalisation for the peasants and was against the industrialisation.
